Best astrophotography lenses for the Canon EOS R7

Canon EOS R7 · 2022 · 32.5 MP APS-C · 612 g · in-body stabilisation

6 astrophotography lenses that fit the Canon EOS R7 (Canon RF mount) — wide and bright for stars and night sky. Sorted brightest-aperture first; every spec from the manufacturer's catalog.

Start with the Canon RF 14mm f/1.4 L VCM. At f/1.4 it is the brightest of the 6 astrophotography Canon RF lenses that fit the Canon EOS R7 — the full comparison is below.

It is a full-frame lens. It fits and shoots at full resolution, and the glass often carries over if you move to a full-frame body later — but for the same framing it is larger, heavier and dearer than a lens built for this sensor. The brightest APS-C option here is Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD at f/2.8.

What these focal lengths actually give you on the Canon EOS R7

The Canon EOS R7 has an APS-C sensor, so it sees a 1.6× crop of what each lens projects (Canon's APS-C is 1.6×, not the 1.5× used by Sony, Nikon and Fujifilm). Every focal length below therefore frames 1.6× tighter than its marked number. That works against you here: the widest option, the Canon RF 10-20mm f/4 L IS STM, frames like 16mm — not as wide as its marked number suggests. For a genuinely wide view on the Canon EOS R7 you want a lens marked around 15mm or shorter.

Effective focal lengths are the marked focal length × the 1.6× sensor crop factor — the field of view, not a change in the lens itself. Aperture and depth of field are unaffected.
