The best lenses for the Canon EOS R1
Buy the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM first. At f/2 it is the brightest standard zoom that fits the Canon EOS R1, framing like 28–70mm on its full-frame sensor. 46 Canon RF lenses fit natively.
Shooting something specific? The 46 lenses are broken out into 17 use-case lists — telephoto (15), sports & action (14), low-light (12), and 14 more — each showing only the Canon RF lenses for that job.
The Canon EOS R1 uses the Canon RF mount, so every Canon RF lens fits. Below are the 46 Canon RF lenses in our index that cover its full-frame sensor natively — sorted by focal length, with max aperture and what each is best for. Specs are the manufacturers' own; we don't invent ratings.
Quick picks for the Canon EOS R1
- Fastest prime: Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM (f/1.2) — the brightest option for low light and background blur.
- Best for portraits: Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM (f/1.2).
- The f/2.8 workhorse zooms: Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM · Canon RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM · Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM.
- Most reach: Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM — 800mm equivalent, for sports, wildlife and distant subjects.
The Canon EOS R1 has a full-frame sensor, so the lenses below cover the full frame and their marked focal lengths are their true field of view (1× crop factor). 15 APS-C-only Canon RF lenses also physically mount, but only in crop mode (you lose resolution) — so they're not in this list.
What the Canon EOS R1 itself changes about lens choice
- Sensor: 24.2 MP stacked full-frame BSI. A balanced resolution — every current lens below resolves comfortably on it.
- Stabilization: in-body. The Canon EOS R1 has IBIS, so even the 15 unstabilized lenses in this pool stay practical handheld — you can pick primes purely on optics.
- Balance: the body weighs 1115 g. The heaviest lens in this pool (Canon RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM, 3340 g) is 3.0× the body — expect a front-heavy rig, and support the lens, not the camera.
- Introduced 2024. Every lens below is current-catalog and mounts with full function — the Canon RF mount contract doesn't age.

What each focal length gives you on the Canon EOS R1
Because the Canon EOS R1 has a 1× crop factor, every lens's marked focal length is already its true field of view. This is the Canon RF range translated into what you actually get on this body — the 46 native lenses span 10–1200mm equivalent.
| Field of view | Equivalent | Lenses that reach it | Brightest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra-wide | 8–23mm | 9 lenses | Canon RF 14mm f/1.4 L VCM f/1.4 |
| Wide | 24–34mm | 16 lenses | Canon RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM f/1.4 |
| Standard | 35–59mm | 17 lenses | Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM f/1.2 |
| Short telephoto | 60–104mm | 19 lenses | Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM f/1.2 |
| Telephoto | 105–199mm | 12 lenses | Canon RF 135mm f/1.8 L IS USM f/1.8 |
| Super-telephoto | 200–600+mm | 15 lenses | Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM f/2.8 |
Before you buy: fit checks for the Canon EOS R1
Most lens returns are fit and expectation mismatches, not faulty glass. These are the ones that catch Canon EOS R1 buyers out — all of them follow from the 1× crop factor and the mount, so you can check them before you order.
- Marked focal lengths are true here. The Canon EOS R1 is full-frame (1×), so a 50mm frames like a 50mm — no conversion maths, and no surprise when it arrives.
- 15 APS-C Canon RF lenses will mount but crop. The Canon EOS R1 drops to the middle of the sensor and you lose resolution. They are excluded from the table below for that reason — check the coverage column before buying used.
- The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM is not the low-light answer. At f/2 it is 1.7× slower than the Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM (f/1.2). If you shoot indoors or at night, buy the prime instead — the zoom's convenience won't rescue a dark room.
Think twice about these on the Canon EOS R1
They all mount and they all work — this is not a verdict and not a review. Each reason below is a number taken from the same manufacturer specifications as the table further down, so you can check it yourself before you order.
| Lens | Why it may not suit this body |
|---|---|
| Canon RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM | 3,340 g on a 1,115 g body — 3.0× the weight of the Canon EOS R1 itself. It balances front-heavy and is the combination most often sent back. |
| Canon RF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM | 3,130 g on a 1,115 g body — 2.8× the weight of the Canon EOS R1 itself. It balances front-heavy and is the combination most often sent back. |
| Canon RF 600mm f/4 L IS USM | 3,090 g on a 1,115 g body — 2.8× the weight of the Canon EOS R1 itself. It balances front-heavy and is the combination most often sent back. |

Weight & weather sealing on the Canon EOS R1
On long approaches the decision is often made by weight, not aperture. Published weights for 45 of the 46 lenses above (the other 1 has no verified weight in our dataset yet — omitted, never estimated):
Packing light? The lightest here is the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM at 120g. The lightest weather-sealed option is the Canon RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM at 445g.
What lenses fit the Canon EOS R1?
Any Canon RF mount lens fits the Canon EOS R1 — it uses the Canon RF mount. 46 Canon RF lenses in our index cover its full-frame sensor natively (24 primes and 22 zooms), spanning 10–1200mm equivalent on this body.
What is the best first lens for the Canon EOS R1?
The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM — at f/2 it is the brightest standard zoom in the Canon RF range that fits, covering 28–70mm equivalent on the Canon EOS R1. For people and low light specifically, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM (f/1.2) is the stronger pick.
What is the crop factor of the Canon EOS R1?
The Canon EOS R1 has a full-frame sensor, so its crop factor is 1× — marked focal lengths are the true field of view, with no conversion needed.
Can I use APS-C lenses on the Canon EOS R1?
Yes, but the Canon EOS R1 switches to crop mode and uses only the center of the sensor (lower resolution). 15 APS-C Canon RF lenses do this. For full quality, use the full-frame Canon RF lenses listed above.
Which f/1.2 or brighter lenses fit the Canon EOS R1?
3 Canon RF lenses in our index open to f/1.2 or wider and fit the Canon EOS R1: Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM, Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM, Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM. Apertures are each manufacturer's stated maximum.
Can I use older or other-brand lenses on the Canon EOS R1?
Yes, with a mount adapter. Every Canon EF and EF-S lens works on every EOS R-series body through Canon's own Mount Adapter EF-EOS R — Canon states lenses work without compromising functionality, speed or quality. Three first-party variants exist; the differences are the control ring and the drop-in filter slot, not compatibility. Native Canon RF lenses need no adapter.
Does the Canon EOS R1 have in-body stabilization (IBIS)?
Yes — the Canon EOS R1 has in-body image stabilization, so unstabilized primes remain practical handheld, and optically stabilized lenses (31 of the 46 here) stack on top of it for telephoto and video work.
